Hi everyone,
Our names are Jamie and Alex, and we are both settlers on this beautiful land with a desire to work and grow towards learning, unlearning, and fostering deep respect and mindfulness for Indigenous practices and culture in our everyday practices and in our classrooms. We are both students at the University of Victoria in the Elementary Post Degree Program, and are excited to be embarking on this learning journey towards reconciliation. You can learn more about each of us, below!
About Jamie
Jamie grew up in Calgary, Alberta on the traditional territory of the Niitsítpiis-stahkoii and lived most recently in Marin, California on the traditional territory of the Coast Miwok. Jamie is an avid activist for human rights and environmentalism, and is an enthusiastic pre-service teacher, eager to get her feet into the classroom! Jamie did her undergraduate degree at UVic in Geography and Environmental Studies, and prior to returning to UVic, worked at a nonprofit called KIDS for the BAY, teaching environmental education programs to schools in the East San Francisco Bay Area.
About Alex
Alex is a settler originally from Los Angeles, from the territories of the Chumash, Kizh, and Tongva nations. A former professional athlete, Alex has worked as a technician at multiple scientific research stations as well as been an emergency substitute teacher for several years. He is passionate about place-based learning, experiental learning through trial and error, getting his hands (mostly his fingernails) dirty – all that to say, he isn’t afraid to make mistakes.
